General Information

Identify significant aerobic bacterial pathogens in wound specimen

Specimen Requirements

Pus or other material properly obtained from a body site (abscesses, eyes, tissue, wounds). Do not send syringe with needle.
Swab or 0.5 mL aseptically aspirated pus or tissue
Sterile screw-cap container or bacterial swab transport; ESwab™ is acceptable

Clinical Material, Abscess, Skin, Ulcer, Lesion, Superficial Wound, Incision, Insect Bite

Stability

48 hours room temperature

Unacceptable Specimen Conditions

Unacceptable specimen transport device (including Incyte Swab, specimen in formalin, expired), frozen, improper labeling, prolonged delay in transport

Limitations

If the specimen is not properly collected and immediately put into transport media anaerobic organisms may not be viable for culture.
