General Information

Identify fungal pathogens from clinical specimen. Lab should be notified of suspected Risk Group 3 organisms. Specimen should be handled with extra safety precautions.

Specimen Requirements

Preferred: Clinical material, fluid, tissue (with a few drops of saline), skin scrapings, hair, nails in sterile container
Will also accept: Bacterial Culture Transport Swab w/Gel, Amies Transport Swab, Eswab. Other transport systems also accepted.

Stability

Ambient: 48 hours. Specimens sent for Dermatophyte culture should be sent ambient.

Unacceptable Specimen Conditions

Unacceptable specimen transport device (including Incyte Swab, specimen in formalin, expired), improper labeling, prolonged delay in transport (greater than 1 week)

4-5 weeks for negative cultures. Positive culture reported as soon as detected, identification may require an additional 2-3 weeks.
