General Information

Identify significant aerobic and anaerobic bacteria from wound specimen

Specimen Type

Wound

Specimen Requirements

Pus, tissue, or other material properly obtained from an abscess, biopsy, aspirate, drainage, exudate, lesion, or wound. To ensure proper growth of organisms, place swabs/specimen in anaerobic transporter. Do not refrigerate.
Swab in anaerobic transporter or ESwab™ transport, 0.5 mL pus, or other fluid or tissue from aspirated site in anaerobic transporter
Anaerobic transport or aerobic/anaerobic bacterial swab transport containing gel medium; ESwab™ transport

Alternate Specimen Type

Clinical Material, Abscess, Pus, Tissue, Bone, Biopsy, Aspirate, Drainage, Exudate, Non-sterile Fluid, Implanted Medical Device

Stability

Ambient 48 hours

Unacceptable Specimen Conditions

Unacceptable specimen transport device (including Incyte Swab, specimen in formalin, expired), frozen, improper labeling, prolonged delay in transport

Limitations

If the specimen is not properly collected and immediately put into transport media anaerobic organisms may not be viable for culture.

Methodology

Stain/Culture

Estimated TAT

4-7 days. Positive culture reported as soon as detected.
