Test to detect the presence of C difficile antigen and toxin from stool

Specimen Requirements

Sterile screw-cap container or stool transport (Para-Pak® white clean vial), no preservative. “Cool Whip” containers, denture cups, or other similar containers often leak or even explode during transport and may be rejected by the laboratory.

Specimen Collection / Processing Instructions

Collect fresh (soft/liquid) fecal specimen in clean airtight container or stool transport media (Cary Blair, C&S)

Minimum Sample Volume

0.5 g or 0.5 mL liquid stool

Stability

72 hours 2-8C, if >72 hours, store frozen

Unacceptable Specimen Conditions

Fecal specimen in Formalin-based fixative (O&P fixative) or alcohol-based fixative (PVA). Fecal specimens collected by colonoscopy. Fecal specimen on a swab. Patient <1 year of age.
